Southern Power Grid: Investment scale in Guangdong to reach over 100 billion yuan by 2025

On April 7, the reporter learned from the mobilization meeting of the major project construction in Guangdong by the State Grid Corporation of China that in 2025, the State Grid Corporation of China will still maintain an investment scale of more than 100 billion yuan in Guangdong, and fully support the strategic goal of Guangdong Province to "recreate a new Guangdong". As the energy "pillar" serving the economic province, the State Grid Corporation of China is currently deploying a new energy system with the "three accelerations" strategy: accelerating the construction of new supporting and guaranteed power transmission projects, accelerating the implementation of the Tibet-Guangdong DC project, accelerating the coordinated development of digitalization and greening, and promoting the optimization and upgrading of Guangdong's energy structure.

01 Green engine: "Dual-wheel" drive of offshore wind power and pumped storage power stations

In response to the goal of 30 million kilowatts of new power installed capacity in 2025 proposed by the Guangdong Provincial Government, the State Grid Corporation of China proposed that this year it will accelerate the construction of a series of key projects such as the offshore wind power transmission of Sanshan Island in Yangjiang, support the construction of tens of millions of kilowatts of offshore wind power bases in eastern and western Guangdong, and help Guangdong's offshore wind power grid-connected capacity remain the leading in the country.

At present, the Yangjiang Sanshan Island offshore wind power flexible direct transmission project is accelerating, the "progress bar" of pumped storage projects in Meizhou, Zhaoqing, Huizhou, Maoming and other places is constantly refreshing, and the western Guangdong new energy bundled transmission project is about to be put into operation.

As a key energy project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Guangdong's new supporting and guaranteed power transmission projects cover 21 cities in the province. They are supporting power grid projects built accordingly to meet the new coal-fired power projects planned in Guangdong Province during the "14th Five-Year Plan".

"After the project is completed, the power transmission capacity from the east and west wings of Guangdong Province to the Pearl River Delta region can be increased from 15.5 million kilowatts and 16 million kilowatts to 32.66 million kilowatts and 25.8 million kilowatts respectively, meeting the support and guaranteed power transmission, and further strengthening the reliable power supply capacity and safety guarantee level of the Greater Bay Area." A relevant person in charge of the Transmission and Distribution Department of the State Grid Corporation of China said.

It is reported that the Yangjiang Sanshan Island Offshore Wind Power Flexible Direct Current Transmission Project is the first offshore wind power supporting transmission project in the country that is uniformly planned and constructed by power grid enterprises. It is also the first ±500 kV offshore wind power integrated sea and land, ultra-long-distance flexible direct current transmission project. It is planned to be put into operation in October 2026. Through this project, a steady stream of clean energy will be directly sent to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, becoming a strong driving force to support the economic development of the Bay Area.

A relevant person in charge of the China Southern Power Grid Company said that by the end of 2025, the second phase of the Meizhou Pumped Storage Power Station will be fully completed. By then, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will become the world's first 10 million kilowatt-level pumped storage bay area, and the power supply support capacity and grid regulation capacity will be greatly improved.

02 Technological breakthrough: Promote mutual promotion of industry and technology

Reporters learned that in 2025, China Southern Power Grid will rely on major projects in Guangdong to carry out key technology research, continue to deepen the promotion and application of flexible DC technology, power artificial intelligence, "Dianhong" IoT operating system, etc., actively promote mutual promotion of industry and technology, and help Guangdong to be self-reliant in high-level science and technology.

In Guangzhou, the Guangzhou Tianhe Tangxia flexible direct back-to-back and supporting projects built by China Southern Power Grid will adopt the internationally leading multi-terminal flexible direct power mutual control technology to explore solutions to the problems of unbalanced development and fragile supply and demand balance between super-large urban power grid areas, and provide new solutions for the stable improvement and transformation of large power grids in first-tier cities around the world. After the project is put into operation, it will increase the power supply capacity of the core area of Guangzhou by 700,000 kilowatts, greatly improving the power supply security in the core area of Guangzhou.

In Shenzhen, China Southern Power Grid will create a highland for energy and power technology innovation and a paradigm for the digital transformation of super-large urban power grids, and promote Shenzhen to build a modern industrial system with Shenzhen characteristics and advantages. On the basis of the completion and commissioning of 16 substations supporting the "20+8" industrial clusters, the company plans to invest about 5.5 billion yuan in the future and strive to build more than 20 substations to meet the new electricity demand of Shenzhen's "20+8" industrial clusters.

Since the "14th Five-Year Plan", China Southern Power Grid has built a Guangdong target grid project with a total length of about 2,000 kilometers, spanning 8 cities in Guangdong, and increasing the power mutual assistance capacity of Guangdong's east and west from 4 million kilowatts to 10 million kilowatts, effectively improving the grid's ability to adapt to the scale development of clean energy such as coastal nuclear power and offshore wind power in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the future, and promoting the power supply reliability of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to the world's leading level.

The relevant person in charge of China Southern Power Grid said that in the future, it will adhere to the strategic emerging industries and traditional industries, lay out forward-looking strategic emerging industries with greater efforts, rely on the National New Energy Storage Innovation Center and other platforms to help build a new energy storage trillion-level industrial cluster; vigorously promote the large-scale application of vehicle-grid interaction, gather momentum for the take-off of the new energy vehicle industry, and help Guangdong build a modern industrial system. At the same time, China Southern Power Grid will accurately connect with Guangdong's "Hundreds of Millions of Projects", accelerate the transformation and upgrading of rural power grids, and actively promote the coordinated development of urban and rural areas.
