On March 18, the State Grid Corporation of China's Datong-Huailai-Tianjin South 1000 kV UHV AC project (hereinafter referred to as the "Datong-Huailai-Tianjin South Project") started construction and is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in June 2027. By then, North China will have a new energy "artery" connecting the Shanxi and Hebei energy bases and the Tianjin load center, which can promote the consumption of more than 14.6 billion kWh of new energy electricity each year.

Zhang Zhigang, chairman and party secretary of the State Grid Corporation, said that the project will build a new channel for "west-to-east power transmission", help ensure power supply and regional coordinated development; serve the development and utilization of new energy, and help the green and low-carbon transformation of energy; innovate and integrate new technologies to help cultivate and develop new quality productivity; stimulate investment to drive new momentum, and help the economy continue to recover and improve people's livelihood.

According to reports, the Datong-Huailai-Tianjin South project starts in Datong, Shanxi Province, passes through the Yanshan Mountains and Haihe River Basin in Hebei Province, and ends in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin. Four new substations will be built in Datong, Huailai, Chengde, and Tianjin North, and the Tianjin South substation will be expanded. The new substation capacity will be 18 million kilovolt-amperes, and the new double-circuit line will be 770 kilometers long. The dynamic investment in the project will reach 23 billion yuan.

Shanxi is rich in wind and solar energy resources. It is a national comprehensive supporting reform pilot zone for the transformation of resource-based economy and the first comprehensive reform pilot for energy revolution in the country. It has ranked first in the country in terms of green electricity export for two consecutive years. The Jibei Clean Energy Base, located in northern Hebei, is one of the nine clean energy bases in the "14th Five-Year Plan". In 2024, the proportion of new energy installed capacity will rank first among provincial power grids in the country.

"After the project is completed, it can promote the transmission and consumption of 8 million kilowatts of photovoltaic and wind power in Shanxi and Hebei, promote the consumption of new energy electricity by more than 14.6 billion kilowatt-hours each year, replace 4.45 million tons of coal consumption, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 11.81 million tons, and strongly support the large-scale development and utilization of clean energy." A relevant person in charge of the State Grid said.

For the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, it means a further improvement in energy and power security capabilities. It is estimated that in 2030, the total social electricity consumption and maximum load in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region alone will increase by about 21% and 43% respectively compared with 2024. After the completion of the Datong-Huailai-Tianjin South project, the UHV power transmission capacity in North China will be increased to 21 million kilowatts, effectively optimizing the energy supply pattern of the North China load center and improving the power supply capacity of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Economic Circle.

At present, UHV has entered an extraordinary development stage of large-scale centralized construction, high-intensity innovation and high-quality transformation and upgrading. According to the above-mentioned person in charge, the Datong-Huailai-Tianjin South Project adopts my country's independently developed 1000 kV UHV AC transmission technology, and for the first time applies the latest independently developed UHV low-noise reactors in large quantities. For the first time, fully enclosed indoor combination electrical appliances are fully applied in UHV AC projects, which effectively drives the high-end, green and intelligent development of power equipment.

Data shows that by the end of 2024, State Grid Corporation of China has built 38 UHV projects of "22 AC and 16 DC", forming the world's largest UHV transmission network. In 2025, State Grid Corporation of China will further increase its investment, and the annual grid investment is expected to exceed 650 billion yuan for the first time.

State Grid Corporation of China said that it will make every effort to ensure the high-quality and efficient advancement of the project, comprehensively accelerate the development of the grid and energy transformation, and ensure the successful conclusion of the "14th Five-Year Plan".
